Demo account

A demo account is a practice account with virtual money where you trade at real prices without risk. It is for learning a platform and testing a strategy.

How it works

Exchanges and brokers offer demo accounts with a play balance, such as $10,000 or 50,000 USDT. Prices, charts and order types usually match the live account, but the money is not real. You can learn stops, leverage and order types without risking anything.

A demo shows whether you understand the mechanics and whether a strategy holds up over dozens of trades. But fills are cleaner than in real life, with less slippage and no real fear. So demo profits do not guarantee live profits.

A sensible path is demo first, then a live account with a small amount where the emotions are real but the losses do not hurt much. Increase size only after steady results.

Example with numbers

You open a $10,000 demo and make 50 trades risking 1% ($100) each. Result: +$800 with a maximum drawdown of $600. Then you move to a $300 live account risking 1% ($3) per trade and check whether the percentages hold up.

Common mistake

The main mistake is trading huge size on demo because it is not real money, then carrying those habits to a live account. Trade the demo exactly as you would trade real money: same account size, same risk per trade, same journal.

Questions and answers

What is a demo account in simple terms?

It is a practice account with play money and real prices. You learn to trade without losing anything.

How long should I trade on demo before going live?

Until you know the platform and have made at least a few dozen trades by your plan. After that, a small live account is the better teacher.

Why do I win on demo but lose on a live account?

Live trading brings fear and greed, and fills are worse because of slippage and delays. Psychology affects decisions more than people expect.
