On-chain analysis

On-chain analysis is studying public blockchain data, such as transfers, address balances and coins moving to and from exchanges, to understand how market participants behave.

How it works

Every transaction on a public blockchain is visible to anyone. Analysts collect them and compute metrics: how many coins reached exchanges, how many addresses are active, when coins last moved, how much large wallets hold. You can do basic checks by hand in a block explorer, while complex metrics come from analytics services.

On-chain data answers questions a price chart cannot: are long-term holders accumulating or selling, are whales sending coins to exchanges, is real network usage growing. It is also used to vet projects, for example how many tokens the team holds and whether they are moving to exchanges.

There are limits. You cannot always tell who owns an address, exchanges' internal transfers look like big moves, and a lot happens off-chain on futures and inside exchanges. An on-chain signal is context, not a precise buy or sell command.

Example with numbers

You notice 40,000 BTC hit exchanges in a week, against a usual 15,000. That could mean someone is getting ready to sell. But if it turns out to be a transfer between the exchange's own wallets, the signal is false, so always check where the coins came from and went.

Common mistake

A common mistake is trading on a single on-chain alert from social media like "whale moved 5,000 BTC to an exchange, crash incoming". Often it is a move between an exchange's or custodian's own wallets. Compare several metrics, check the address's history and combine on-chain data with chart analysis and risk management.

Questions and answers

What is on-chain analysis in simple terms?

It is reading data straight from the blockchain: who sends how much and where. It helps judge the mood of large players and network activity.

Where can I see on-chain data?

Basic things are in a block explorer, where you see transactions and balances. Aggregated metrics come from dedicated analytics services, some of them free.

Does on-chain analysis work for short-term trading?

It mostly helps with the market backdrop over weeks and months. For short trades, single on-chain signals are too noisy.
