Pipette

A pipette is one tenth of a pip, the fifth decimal place in a quote such as EUR/USD 1.08505. For yen pairs it is the third decimal place.

How it works

Most currency pairs used to be quoted with four decimals, and the smallest step was the pip, 0.0001. Brokers later added a fifth decimal to make prices and spreads more precise. That extra step, 0.00001, is called a pipette or fractional pip.

For Japanese yen pairs a pip is 0.01, so a pipette is 0.001: in a USD/JPY quote of 150.125 the last digit is pipettes. On a five-digit platform one pip equals 10 pipettes, which is easy to mix up.

The mix-up matters in practice: if you mean a 20-pip stop but the software counts in the smallest price steps (often also called points), your stop ends up only 2 real pips from entry.

Example with numbers 1

EUR/USD moves from 1.08500 to 1.08537. That is 37 pipettes, or 3.7 pips. On 1 standard lot a pip is worth $10, so the move made $37.

Example with numbers 2

A MetaTrader expert advisor sets a stop of 50 points. On a five-digit quote that is 50 pipettes, which is 5 pips, not 50 as the author intended.

Common mistake

A common mistake is confusing pips and pipettes when entering stops, targets and spreads. The stop ends up 10 times closer or further than planned. Before trading, check how many decimals the quote has and confirm on a demo how much money your stop actually risks.

Questions and answers

Ten. For example, EUR/USD moving from 1.08500 to 1.08510 is 10 pipettes, or 1 pip.
