Safe-haven asset

A safe-haven asset is one investors buy during panics because it tends to hold its value or rise when risky assets fall.

How it works

The classic safe havens are gold, the US dollar, the Japanese yen, the Swiss franc and US government bonds. What they share is deep liquidity and trust: in a crisis, big money flows to where it is easiest and safest to wait things out.

This is often described as risk-on versus risk-off. In calm times (risk-on) money goes into stocks, crypto and high-rate currencies. In fear (risk-off) it goes into safe havens, and the yen, franc or gold strengthen even if the bad news is about a completely different country.

Safe-haven status is not guaranteed. Gold can fall with everything else in the first days of a panic, when investors urgently need dollars. Bitcoin is sometimes called digital gold, but in past stress episodes it has more often behaved like a risk asset.

Example with numbers

During a sharp sell-off a stock index falls 4% in a day while USD/JPY drops from 150 to 145, a yen gain of over 3%. A trader long AUD/JPY takes a double hit: the risk-sensitive Australian dollar falls and the safe-haven yen rises.

Common mistake

A common mistake is buying gold or bitcoin on every scary headline expecting them to rise. The reaction depends on what is actually happening: when rates are rising, gold can fall even in a nervous market. Look at how the asset really behaved in similar situations, and protect the trade with a stop like any other.
