Short squeeze and long squeeze

A short squeeze is a sharp price rise that forces short sellers to close by buying, which pushes price even higher. A long squeeze is the same thing downward, driven by longs.

How it works

When the market is full of leveraged shorts, even a small rise pushes them toward stop-losses and liquidation. A short can only be closed by buying, so every triggered stop and every liquidation is a market buy. Price jumps, knocks out the next group of shorts, and the move feeds on itself.

A long squeeze is the mirror image: overheated longs get liquidated by selling, and the drop speeds up. In crypto this is common because of high leverage. Signs of built-up fuel are large open interest, a heavily tilted long/short ratio and extreme funding.

A squeeze is usually brief: a long-bodied candle, a spike in volume and liquidations, then often a pullback. Chasing it is risky, and holding a position against an overheated crowd without a stop is riskier still.

Example with numbers

BTC is at $60,000, funding is deeply negative and many traders are short at 20x. Price rises 2% to $61,200, the first stops and liquidations fire, and the market buys push price to $63,000. That is almost 5% in an hour with no news: closing shorts were the engine.

Common mistake

The mistake is shorting just because it has gone up too much, when everyone around you is short too. Those positions are exactly the fuel for a squeeze. If you trade against the move, use a stop and a small size, and remember that negative funding with rising open interest means squeeze risk is high.

Questions and answers

What is a short squeeze in simple terms?

It is when price rises sharply because traders who are short rush to close by buying. Their buying pushes price even higher.

What is the difference between a long squeeze and a short squeeze?

Direction. In a long squeeze, holders of longs are forced to sell and price drops sharply.

How can you tell a squeeze might happen?

Look for one-sided positioning: extreme funding, high open interest, a lopsided long/short ratio and liquidation clusters near price. That signals risk, not timing.
