Card limits

Card limits are the maximum amounts you can spend, withdraw or load per transaction, day, month or year. The issuer sets them, and you can often lower some yourself.

How it works

There are usually several limits: per purchase, daily and monthly spending, ATM cash withdrawals, top-ups and sometimes total yearly volume. There can also be separate limits for online payments and for transactions abroad.

Limits depend on your verification level. With a basic check they are low, and after you confirm your address and source of funds they are often raised. This is how the issuer meets anti-money-laundering rules and caps its own risk.

Besides the issuer's limits, there are your own. Many apps let you set a lower daily limit or switch off online payments or cash withdrawals. It is a simple way to cap the damage if your card details are stolen.

Example with numbers

Your card has a $2,000 daily spending limit and a $500 withdrawal limit. In the morning you buy a $1,800 laptop, so only $200 more can be spent until the day resets. A $350 hotel payment that day is declined, even though your balance covers it.

Common mistake

A common mistake is finding out about a limit when a large payment or withdrawal is already declined. Before a trip or a big purchase, open the limits section in the app and check daily, monthly and cash withdrawal limits. If you need more, complete extra verification or request a higher limit in advance.

Questions and answers

What are card limits in simple terms?

They are caps on how much the card lets you spend or withdraw in a given period, even if there is money in the account.

How do I raise my card limit?

Usually through the issuer's app or support. Often you need to complete fuller verification and confirm your source of funds.

Why was my payment declined when I have money on the card?

Common reasons are a used-up daily or monthly limit, online or foreign payments switched off, or the bank suspecting fraud. Check the limits and notifications in your app.
