Off-ramp

An off-ramp is a way to turn crypto back into regular money: selling it and withdrawing to a bank account or card, or getting cash.

How it works

The most common route is to move crypto to an exchange or service, sell it for fiat and withdraw to your bank account. Other options are a P2P sale, a crypto card that spends crypto directly, or a crypto ATM that pays out cash.

With large amounts, your bank or the service may ask where the money came from. Be ready to show the history: where and when you bought the crypto, at what price, and exchange statements. Without this the transfer can be held and the account frozen during the review.

In many countries, selling crypto for money is a taxable event. The rules differ by country, so before a large withdrawal find out how it works where you live and keep your purchase records.

Example with numbers

You sell 0.05 ETH on an exchange at $3,000 and get $150. The exchange charges 0.1% per trade ($0.15) and $1 for a bank withdrawal. $148.85 arrives in your account.

Common mistake

The most common mistake is withdrawing a large sum with no preparation and then being surprised when the bank freezes the account. Save your exchange statements and purchase history in advance, find out how your bank treats transfers from crypto platforms, and if needed withdraw in parts rather than one unexpected lump. And do not sell crypto to strangers on P2P for reversible payment methods.

Questions and answers

What is an off-ramp in simple terms?

It is a way to sell crypto and receive regular money in your account, on a card or as cash.

Why does my bank block transfers from an exchange?

Banks must check suspicious incoming money. A large transfer from a crypto platform with no clear origin often triggers questions and a request for documents.

Do I pay tax when I cash out crypto?

In many countries tax arises when you sell crypto at a profit, not when you move the money to your bank. The rules depend on the country, so check with a local tax professional.
