CBDC (central bank digital currency)
A CBDC is a digital form of a national currency issued by the central bank. It is not a cryptocurrency: the state controls it, and it is always worth the same as regular money.
How it works
Cash is issued by the central bank, while money in your bank account is a commercial bank's debt to you. A CBDC is a third option: digital money that is a direct liability of the central bank, like cash but electronic. One digital euro or yuan always equals one regular euro or yuan.
CBDCs can be retail (for people and businesses) or wholesale (for settlement between banks). One of the first retail CBDCs was the Bahamas' Sand Dollar (2020), China is piloting a digital yuan, and the European Central Bank is preparing a digital euro. A CBDC does not have to run on a blockchain.
Supporters point to cheap, fast payments and access to money for people without bank accounts. Critics worry the state could see every payment and restrict them. How privacy and limits work is decided by each country, and the rules differ widely.
You pay 20 units of a central bank digital currency at a store. The money moves from your CBDC wallet to the seller instantly. The rate never changes: 20 digital units are exactly 20 regular ones, unlike BTC, whose price can shift during the payment.
A common mistake is confusing CBDCs with stablecoins or crypto and expecting price gains or anonymity. A CBDC is the same government money in a new form: the rate is fixed, there is one issuer, and oversight is likely to be at least as tight as with a bank account.
