Negative balance protection
Negative balance protection is a rule that stops a client from losing more money than was in the account. If a sharp move pushes the balance below zero, the broker wipes the debt.
How it works
Normally the stop out closes losing positions while there is still money in the account. But in a gap, when price jumps past several levels at once, for example over a weekend or after a surprise central bank decision, a position can close at a much worse price. The balance goes negative, and without protection the client owes the broker that amount.
A famous example is 15 January 2015, when the Swiss National Bank unexpectedly dropped its EUR/CHF floor of 1.20. The franc jumped about 30% within minutes, many clients ended up deep in the red, and some brokers went bankrupt.
In the EU and the UK negative balance protection has been mandatory for retail clients since 2018, and some other countries have similar rules. Professional clients and clients of offshore brokers often do not get it. Protection usually applies per account, not to all your money with the broker.
You have $1,000 in the account. You hold a large position over the weekend, and on Monday the market gaps: the position closes at a $1,600 loss. The balance is −$600. With protection the broker resets it to $0 and you lose $1,000. Without it, the broker can ask you to pay the $600.
The beginner mistake is thinking negative balance protection makes high leverage safe. It caps your loss at the deposit, but you still lose the whole deposit. Check that protection is in the contract for your specific account type, and avoid holding large positions over weekends and major central bank decisions.
Questions and answers
What is negative balance protection in simple terms?
It is a guarantee that you cannot end up in debt to your broker: at most you lose the money that was in your account.
Can your balance go negative in forex?
Yes, in a sharp gap a position can close worse than the stop-out level. Without protection the client owes the difference.
