Position trading

Position trading is a style where trades are held for weeks, months or longer to catch a big trend. Decisions come from daily and weekly charts and fundamental reasons.

How it works

A position trader is after the large move, not intraday swings. They study higher timeframes (daily, weekly), macro conditions, market cycles and the asset's fundamentals. Trades are few, sometimes only a handful a year.

Stops sit far away because normal pullbacks on higher timeframes are large, say 15–25% in crypto. To keep risk per trade small, position size is reduced. Leverage is low or zero, otherwise a normal pullback ends in liquidation.

Unlike buy and forget (HODL), position trading has an exit plan: a target, a stop or a trend-change condition. It suits people with little screen time, but it takes patience to sit through long stretches with no movement.

Example with numbers

Account $10,000, risk per trade 2% ($200). You buy BTC at $60,000 on a weekly uptrend with a stop at $48,000 (−20%). Position size: $200 / 20% = $1,000, about 0.0167 BTC. A target of $90,000 (+50%) would make about $500, a 1:2.5 risk-to-reward.

Common mistake

A common mistake is holding for months with leverage on perpetual futures. Funding over a long period eats the profit, and a normal pullback liquidates the position. For long holds use spot or minimal leverage and size the position from a wide stop.

Questions and answers

What is position trading in simple terms?

It means long trades lasting weeks or months to profit from a big trend. There are few trades, but each lasts a long time.

What is the difference between position trading and swing trading?

A swing trader holds for days to a couple of weeks and catches single waves. A position trader holds for months and rides the whole trend.

How is position trading different from HODL?

HODL means buy and hold with no exit plan. A position trader knows in advance where to take profit and where to admit being wrong.
