Wyckoff method

The Wyckoff method is a way of reading markets through accumulation and distribution cycles, using price and volume to see whether large players are building or unloading positions.

How it works

It was developed by American trader Richard Wyckoff in the early 20th century. He described the market as a four-stage cycle: accumulation (big players buy in a range), markup, distribution (big players sell in a range) and markdown. He called the imagined large operator the 'Composite Man'.

The core of the method is the accumulation and distribution schematics, with phases A to E and named events inside the range. In accumulation these include the selling climax (SC), a sharp drop on huge volume; the automatic rally (AR); the secondary test (ST); the Spring, a false break below the range; and the sign of strength (SOS), a firm move up.

Wyckoff set out three laws: supply and demand; cause and effect (the longer the range, the bigger the move after it); and effort versus result (volume should confirm price). The method fits crypto well, where long ranges after big drops are common.

Example with numbers

After a decline, BTC trades in a $25,000–$31,000 range for several months. Price breaks below $25,000 to $24,300 on high volume and is back above $25,500 within two days, which looks like a Spring. Then it breaks above $31,000 on rising volume, a sign of strength. A Wyckoff trader looks to buy a pullback to $31,000 with a stop below the middle of the range.

Common mistake

The mistake is trying to label every phase and event while price is still inside the range and guessing whether it is accumulation or distribution. While price is ranging, both look alike. Do not enter on a guess: wait for a key event (a Spring or a break out of the range) and confirmation from volume.

Questions and answers

What is the Wyckoff method in simple terms?

It is a way to read ranges: using price and volume to judge whether big players are building positions before a rise or unloading them before a fall.

What is a Wyckoff Spring?

It is a false break below an accumulation range. Price dips under the range briefly, takes out stops and snaps back, and a rally often follows.

Does Wyckoff work in crypto?

Its schematics are widely applied to crypto, especially to long ranges after drops. But the phase is hard to call in advance, so you need confirmation and stops.
